Sadam Ali upsets Cotto

Sadam Ali upset Miguel Cotto, who was having his last fight, to win the WBO junior-middleweight belt when he won on a unanimous 12-round points decision at the Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night.

The scores were 116-112 and 115-113 twice.

After a slow start in the first round Ali (27-2; 14) stunned the defending champion with a straight right in the second round but Cotto came back in the third to possibly shade the round.

Cotto did well to take rounds five and six but Ali outscored him and did enough in the later rounds to take the decision.

Despite a good last round for the 37-year-old Cotto, this proved one fight too many.

On the undercard, WBC junior-featherweight champion Rey Vargas (31-0; 22) retained his belt with a wide unanimous points decision over Oscar Negrete (17-1; 7).

The scores were 120-108 and 119-108 twice.

Despite the wide margins in the scores, it was an entertaining fight with the taller Vargas scoring from the outside throughout.

Angel Acosta won the vacant WBO junior-flyweight belt with a 10th-round stoppage win over Juan Alejo.

Acosta dominated from the opening bell as he scored with uppercuts in the middle rounds.

He caught Alejo with a big left hook in the 10th round and with Alejo in no condition to continue, the referee stepped in to wave the fight off at 1:33 into the round.

Acosta improves his record to 17-1; 17 and Alejo’s record drops to 25-5-1; 15.
